Description

As an education centre for sustainable living, Monkton Wyld Court hosts a range of courses, conferences and gatherings for adults, families and children, providing a valued resource for the local community and for people from further afield, including the tired city-dweller seeking the re-invigoration of fresh food and country air. With our eleven acres of gardens and meadows, we are located in a secluded valley within walking distance of Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Dorset’s famous Jurassic coast, so we are the perfect base for seaside holidays. The Grade II listed Neogothic Court was built in 1848 as a Rectory. In 1940, pioneering educators Carl and Eleanor Urban established a co-educational boarding school here to promote cooperative living and learning. Although the original Monkton Wyld School closed in 1982, the importance of farming and other practical skills and a focus on sustainability have remained central to our ethos. The Court is now run and maintained by a resident community with the help of volunteers. We work to develop and promote a lifestyle based on mutual respect for each other and for the natural environment, and strive to live as sustainably as we can. Decisions are made by consensus, and new community members join through a gradual process that always begins with a volunteering visit.

Directions

  • Road from Axminster (4.5 miles)
    The nearest train station is Axminster (4 ½ miles away) and the closest bus stop (on X31 or 31 bus between Axminster and Bridport via Lyme Regis) is at Hunter’s Lodge in Raymond’s Hill (2 miles away). Taxis from Axminster should be booked in advance (about £20) and we reccommend Go Eco Cabs who can be contacted on 01297445444. Lifts are occasionally available upon request from the B&B (£10), please ask for details. If you are planning to drive here, we are about a mile off the A35, but ensure that you follow the turning to Monkton Wyld, not Monkton Wyld Farm.
