Bay Horse Wolsingham Information

Description

We are a small hotel renowned in Wolsingham and the surrounding areas for our food and drink, our historical place within the community and our stunning interior and exterior aesthetics. We are perfect for meals with family, a drink with friends, or a quiet pint with a newspaper. The Bay Horse Hotel is an excellent base when visiting the beautiful area of Weardale. To the West of the town the lovely scenery of the Durham dales forms part of one of England’s largest areas of outstanding natural beauty the North Pennines 30 minutes to the East and many exciting tourist sites and shopping centres including the Metro centre and the historic city of Durham with its castle, Cathedral and delightful river pathways. In the wider area are High Force, Low Force and Cauldron Snout waterfalls, Raby Castle, Barnard Castle, Bowes Museum, Hall Hill Farm, Blanchland, Derwent Reservoir, Durham Wildlife Trust's Visitor Centres at Low Barns and Hannah's Meadow, Newbiggin Chapel, The Bishop's Palace and Auckland Castle, Escomb Saxon Church, Binchester Roman Fort, Locomotion-National Railway Museum at Shildon, Nenthead Mines, Allenhead Heritage Centre, South Tynedale Railway. There are many more other places to visit in the area and The Bay Horse can provide you with an array of tourist information to help you plan and get the most out of your stay. The earliest reference to the Bay Horse Hotel at Wolsingham is 1827, though it is believed to be older. The original building was destroyed in the early 1920’s when a raging fire burnt down the hotel. The Bay Horse was once again rebuilt, with an additional storey. The veranda and distinctive bay windows remained the same and the hotel became one of the most striking and distinguished buildings in the village.
